Position Overview:
The Behavioral Health Crisis Assessment Counselor facilitates patient involvement in treatment and education, performs individual, group, and family counseling, and manages utilization review and discharge planning. You will collaborate effectively with the healthcare team to ensure timely, safe, and appropriate care, while providing patients and families with necessary resources and education.
You will interpret and communicate complex patient and family needs, serve as a liaison with protective services, and support crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques to manage dangerous or high-risk situations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct crisis assessments and provide therapeutic interventions to support patients in acute distress.
  • Facilitate patient participation in treatment planning, education, and discharge processes.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team members to ensure safe, timely, and effective care delivery.
  • Assess psychosocial risk factors based on prior functioning, support systems, and reactions to illness or trauma.
  • Counsel patients and families on emotional, social, and financial impacts of mental health or disability.
  • Access and coordinate community resources, including protective services, foster care, guardianship, and mental health placements.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for cases involving abuse, neglect, domestic violence, and other protective issues.
  • Provide intervention in guardianship, foster care, and adoption cases.
  • Maintain documentation and manage all functions related to utilization review and discharge planning.

Qualifications & Requirements:
  • Education: Master's Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field required.
  • Licensure: Current licensure or license eligibility in Indiana as an HSPP, LMFT, LCSW, or LMHC required.
    • Clinical licensure preferred.
  • Certifications: CPI (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention) certification may be required.
  • Experience: Relevant healthcare, mental health, or community-based experience preferred.
  • Knowledge & Skills:
    • Knowledge of the impact of disease processes and human behavior for assessments, crisis intervention, and counseling.
    • Understanding of state and county legal mandates related to child and adult protective services.
    • Principles of growth and development across the lifespan.
    • Strong crisis de-escalation and intervention skills.
    • Ability to develop and maintain strong community, law enforcement, and agency relationships.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
